The specifications of Sportsman feeds cover both the nutrient levels which are required, for example, for energy and protein, together with the raw materials used to provide them. This is the first of a series of three short articles which describes the major raw materials used by Sportsman and covers cereals, cereal by-products and oils and fats.

All the raw materials used by Sportsman are carefully selected on the basis of their quality and consistency, and after consideration of their nutrient analysis and microbiological status. The influence of different raw materials on the physical characteristics of the finished feed, a crucial factor in terms of encouraging feed intake, is also taken into account.

Cereals, in particular UK grown wheat, form the basis of our game feeds. Wheat is high in energy but low in protein - typically around 11%, and is the most important cereal used, and its quality is carefully monitored, particularly at harvest.

Some barley may also be incorporated into feeds for older birds in the poult/maintenance/prebreeder stage where its lower energy level makes it attractive. Barley usually has a similar protein level to wheat.

Wheatfeed, the byproduct from milling wheat for flour, is also a useful ingredient with a higher protein (15%) than wheat or barley but with a reduced energy level. This is because the milling process removes much of the starch from the grain, the part of the grain high in energy, producing a raw material with higher protein and fibre levels.

Where higher energy levels are required, Sportsman feeds include added fats and oils. In addition, the inclusion of optimum levels of fats and oils is also important in relation to the physical quality of the feed. Generally a harder fat is sprayed on the outside of the feed and soya oil included within the mixture.
